Elín Þ. Rafnsdóttir is a visual artist based in Reykjavík, Iceland. Elín has been developing and redefining her artistic projects in a constant experimental process. It is safe to say that Elín is not afraid to try new media in the art of painting. Elín works in graphics, oil paints, watercolours, mixed media and drawing. During her career, Elín has worked on various projects that are characterized by different periods that develop from one to another.
In her work, Elín draws inspiration from nature and forms found in nature. She ponders various fragments of memories from her hikes around Iceland.
“The artworks are done so, I start to paint an empty canvas according to how I feel that day. Images come to mind and I never know in advance what will happen. Most often, what comes to mind are memories from hikes in nature in Iceland. Towards the end, the artwork has usually undergone major changes from the beginning and often taken an unexpected turn. Each artwork is a journey from uncertainty to a finished artwork that has an independent life on its own. ”
In her paintings, Elín has worked with expressionist painting methods mixed with drawing. Her work is based on nature experiences and is a personal elaboration of her environment and life.
Elín has held solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions in Iceland and abroad. She studied sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy and graduated with an MFA from the University of New Paltz, NY in sculpture and graphics.
